As per International Coaching Federation, Coshing is:
“partnering with Clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Coaching creates a safe environment for Clients to think and guides Clients on a journey of discovery and self-awareness toward their success.

Coaching is the most effective way to develop leadership in your team.

Coaching, however, is a component of leadership.

I have outlined a schema to illustrate what the leadership entails.

In a book “The Quiet Leadership” by David Rock, you can find many practical techniques of being Leader-Coach.

What is Coaching and what is not?

Coaching:

  • Inspiring thinking
  • Solution focus
  • Facilitating action planning
  • Fact-oriented
  • Focused on Client’s agenda
  • Non-biased
  • Empathetic
  • Transferring ownership for action
What is NOT coaching?
  • Problem-focus
  • Stuck in past
  • Judging
  • Assumption-oriented
  • Resistance
  • Problem-solver
What is Mentoring?
  • Giving advice/feedback
  • Sharing wisdom/experience
  • Offering observations/insights
  • Fostering awareness/discovery
What is Managing?
  • Solving the problem
  • Telling what to do
  • Providing direction/expectations
Closing note:

Your leadership style should be adjusted according to the capabilities and performance of your employees.

In the illustration below, you can visualize which element applies based on the employee’s knowledge.

Therefore, when the employee has less knowledge and experience, you might want to mentor more, to close the knowledge gap before coaching.
